South Africa: Mega-Land Claim: 263 Owners affected

Here is an example of a Super-Land Claim. Despite its enormous size, not one peep about a claim such as this is ever mentioned in the media - and even less is heard about this outside of South Africa.

The only reason I know about this is because a co-worker of mine is one of the 263 owners who stands to lose his property in this land claim.

As at February 2005, there are still 20,000 Land Claims to be settled in South Africa. 57,000 have been processed so far!!

The affected properties in this case, lie outside Pretoria. The owners are busy trying to estimate the total value of their properties. My co-worker estimates (thumb suck) that the total value may be a billion Rand or more for the properties which are in this one land claim!!

To put this in perspective, the South African government only has R810 million available this year for ALL the Land Claims which it will be processing this year. The entire budget for Land Claims therefore is less than the value of this one claim alone. Apparently, this claim also covers land where a nuclear power station was built!!!

The owners involved in this land claim have hired themselves one of the best Land Claims attorneys in the country. They will attempt to keep their properties - if the law allows them the chance. If this is not possible... then they will simply have to accept whatever amount of money the Government decides to pay them. My co-worker has resigned himself to the fate that there is a good chance he will lose his property.

The owners of these properties are going to do everything they can within the bounds of the law. But they know they stand very little chance.

They did set up a website giving details of the land claim. They also have a bank a/c where money can be donated to them. All the details of this can be seen on their website. They do have regular meetings and newsletters, and you can follow their progress in the coming months by going to their website.

Don't forget to download a free copy of the book: The Great South African Land Scandal. This book was written by one of the top Land Claims attorney's in South Africa and it shows the inside story of what happens to land that has been acquired in the Land Claims process.
